I have the honour to inform you that Hon. Sir P. Chater and Hon.Mr Osborne approached me with a proposal to exchange the Marine Lots owned by the W. & G.Company
and the Land Reclamation Company on the south of Salis-
Coor bury Road Kowhen for the lote lying to the north of
that road owned by Government together with the Police
Camber and a money payment by Government provided that
they should be allowed to retain a strip some 60 feet
wide on the south of the road.
They urged that the Marine
Lota would make by far the best side for the terminal ata-
tion of the railway, while the siding to the 7. & G. Company
would be facilitated, and it would be possible for it to
enter the property of that Company (situated on the west
of the Peninsula) from the south, and so to traverse it
longitudinally. I entirely agree that this site is by far
the beat for the terminal and I had indeed myself proposed
it some years ago,but I understood at the time that it would
not be possible to acquire these lots except at a quite pro-
hibitive price. The late Mr Lindsay and Hon. Er Chatham,
D.P.. also concurred in the desirability of this site. Since
the proposal had now come from the owners there seemed a
probability of securing the land on reasonable terms. I
therefore instructed the D.P.W. to enter into negociations
and report the result to me. He did eo, and presented
a statement shewing the valuation of the land belonging
to the Government and that belonging
to the
Companies which it was proposed to exchange.
This will,
